Diving in Czech Republic. It is possible. And here is the best place to see

Updated: Dec 5, 2023

What does a diver do when he doesn't have salty water to go under? He finds a sweet spot (pun intended)

Main photo

Czech Republic does not have sea, but it does have a lot of people that are passionate about diving. There are a few diving centers in Prague, and while they are able to teach you to dive, they do not do recreational dives in Czech Republic for the most part. Most of the dive centers I've been to told me that they go out of the country for dive trips, and the diving inside is minimal. So, if one wants to dive regularly in Czech Republic, one should find some individuals that are diving for fun. These individuals are diving regularly. Sometimes, like the dive centers, by organizing a group dive in other countries (usually Croatia or Egypt), sometimes by just taking their gear and going to the nearest dive site in Czech Republic. All of Czech republic's dive sites are sweet water dive sites. Rivers, lakes, dams are the usual suspects, and if you are thinking that it sounds boring then know that there is no such thing as a boring dive! But, with respect, it is usually less exciting than diving with exotic fishes and seeing colorful colors and the cold water year round will make you think twice. Having said that, it is beautiful nevertheless, and a great experience for the people who like cold.

Lomeček

One of these diving sites is called Lomeček, it is located close to the German border. It is a quarry, with a pond of about 15m deep. The place is run by some art-loving people, and is filled with art all around (usually local). Artists donate their art to the place, and the place is regularly having concerts, music night, art shows and more, it also has a huge mural done by Michael Rittstein.

The coolest part (for me) is that some of the art is also underwater, in the pond you can find Statues, fish, and an underwater room that was probably used for watching said things before the air in it got heavy, and even a boat.

The water is cold, so better do it in the summer!

I'm still working on a contact list for Czech diving, so bear with me. Until then, ask a friend (better a local one)!
