Police nad Metují is a town in the north of Czech Republic, close to the Polish border.

The town lies in the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area.

The town existed since the 13th century, and has a historic monastery and some interesting architecture of buildings around the town. The streets are interesting by themselves and it was always nice to walk them. To get there we took a train from Prague to Žďár nad Metují and from there took a bus to Police nad Metují. Once again we forfeited our tent in order not to sleep in a national reserve (which is illegal!) and we stayed in one of the many pensions that exist in the town.

There plenty of hikes around that area, here is what we did:

Day 1 - A visit to Poland | 15.5km | 6hrs

We started by taking a short bus to another town called Machov. From there we walked to Krásná vyhlídka - a scenic viewpoint between the rocky surroundings, for a breakfast. Then we crossed the border to Poland, passed through the town Karłów for a beer break, got to Szczeliniec Wielki and the national park surrounding it, and after lunch there we continued through the radioactive-green fields to cross back to Czech Republic to finish the hike on our starting point, and taking a bus back to where we stayed

The highlights:

  • Krásná vyhlídka - A perfect spot for breakfast, if you don't mind going up A LOT of stairs before you eat (and please clean up after yourself!). You can see the surrounding from there so you eat with a view

  • Szczeliniec Wielki - There is a national park that is built on the top of the mountain. The park is rich with Rock formations, viewpoints and a lot of interesting places to see. Important to know, the park is a circular walking route, there is a correct direction to go by. So you better read the signs that say which way to go and if you are the only ones walking in that direction then you chose wrong (like we did), and you will need to let everyone pass in narrow places before you can continue

Day 2 - Old chapels and some more rocks | 18km | 6hrs

This time we started and ended in the town itself, we started walking until we saw a group of people drinking beer at 10am in front of a restaurant (hey, it's Czech Republic after all). After hearing the amazing story of the beer triathlon we continued walking through an area filled with old chapels, and of course the rocky views that the area is known for. We passed again through very green field to reach a mountain top that presents the rocky surroundings in the best way possible, and then headed back to our finish point, from where we took a bus and a train back to Prague

The highlights:

  • Hvězda - A chapel that was built in the 18th century, very preserved, beautiful to look at. As a bonus there is a very good restaurant right near the chapel so you can have your beer and enjoy the history

  • Ostaš - A mountain top looking down on all the area, with beautiful views of forests and rocks, and a great stone maze to follow

Final thoughts

As always, we planned our stay in the area based on the amount of free time we had, I'm sure there are plenty more hikes to do around Police nad Metuji. I hope you found it helpful in planning your next hike in Czech Republic. If you liked it and want to discover more places like that, tell us!
