Bruges is famous for it's medieval magic, but being part of Belgium makes it another place to have great beer and amazing food. Where, do you ask? Here are our recommendations
Since the first time I've been to Bruges a lot of places had changed, but the important ones always find a way to be there, here they are:
Let's start with the important part - Must visit beer places:
Brewery Bourgogne de Flanders - My favorite brewery in the city, and home of one of my favorite beers all time: Bourgogne de Flanders Brune. The brewery itself is a cozy place with a few beers on tap, and if you are lucky you can catch a place on the river bank and enjoy the view. It gets busy around lunch time so choose your hours carefully
Halve Maan Brewery - The oldest brewery in the area, full of history and A LOT of sitting space. The place is always full and yet somehow there are always more places to sit at. They also offer beer tours that would teach you about the history of beer in the region and ,of course, taste of the house beers.
Beers Yesterday's World - Located just outside the Halve Maan brewery, there is a small bar with a great selection of beer. While having a great selection of beers is not so special if you are in Belgium, this place has a special vibe and is one of the only places that offers you a 10-beer taster. Choose wisely!
Bauhaus Bar - A cozy bar located towards the east from the city center. Has a good selection of beers and food and offers an amazing beer tasting (that I had to include in my 24 hour itinerary in Bruges)
And then there is the food:
Bruges is full of good food places, so I'm going to make it easy on you and list only 2 places that are a must:
De Gastro - The absolute best restaurant I visited in the city. The place is very nice and cozy (and has some outside sitting), the service is top-notch and the food is just amazing! The place gets full really fast, so you better reserve it for dinner in the morning or try to catch a free table during lunch time
ODA Rooftop Bar - What happens when you forget to reserve a table at De Gastro is that you are left to look for other places to eat. Lucky enough, I have stumbled upon this hidden gem. A restaurant on a rooftop with a view of one of the cathedrals. With a high-end feel and amazing food choices.
Final thoughts
I am aware that this list is small. The city is small but it has a lot of good places which I found throughout my visits, and out of all of my visits these are the only places I remember by heart and consider a must. If you had the chance to try any of them let me know, and if you have a better place then let me know anyway, and I'll make sure I visit it next time around!
